Sturm 19 Park
The former football pitch now offers space for a varied leisure programme.
After the former sports facility of the football club in the district had lain derelict for years, extensive planning and discussions with local residents and future users took place. Construction work is now beginning on the new Sturm 19 Park in the immediate vicinity of the university hospital.
‘The area is to be made accessible for future generations. The park will invite people to stroll and linger and will be equipped with a water feature for children, trampolines, a beach volleyball court and a fitness centre. There will also be a playground and hammocks,’ reveals Mayor Matthias Stadler. A permanent base for the municipal garden centre will also be stationed at the end of the park.
Wide range of uses for Sturm 19 Park
Sturm 19 Park offers a wide range of leisure activities: ‘There are many different ways to exercise, play and do sport here. Large swings, a water playground and a climbing combination invite you to balance, climb and play. A beach volleyball court, calisthenics equipment and a basketball hoop provide a place to socialise and have fun,’ explains Anna Detzlhofer from D/D Landschaftsplanung.
The varied interplay of open lawns and dense planting, intensive sports use and quiet natural zones makes Sturm 19 Park an attractive destination for young and old in all seasons.
Nature experience and recreation
Nature experiences are also provided for in the new park. A community garden, a spacious biodiversity zone and many climate-appropriate trees create a pleasant atmosphere and provide sufficient habitat for flora and fauna. In the biodiversity garden, the focus is on observing nature, it can be entered with care and offers different flowering aspects in every season.
The history of Sturm 19 is honoured by the preservation of the grandstand and its faithful restoration. The remaining floodlight masts and the spacious lawn are also reminders of the historic use of the site.
An on-site garden centre, a toilet container and the lighting of the main paths round off the varied offer and promote harmonious interaction. A container with a pergola is available for other activities.
Completion by summer 2024
Anna Detzlhofer adds: ‘The transition zones to the neighbouring urban spaces are designed with dense and varied planting and modelling. To the north, the lawn merges into a wall, while to the east a small-scale modelled area creates a buffer to the neighbourhood. To the west, the biodiversity garden creates a quiet zone.’
Excavation work is currently being carried out to lay water, electricity and supply lines. ‘The paths will then be paved. We want to start planting trees in the autumn,’ reports master gardener Robert Wotapek. The equipment and facilities will then follow successively. ‘Completion is planned for summer 2024,’ says Wotapek with determination.
