Pilgrimage with the Mariazellerbahn
On the occasion of the Holy Year 2025, this programme invites you to take a look inside and discover beautiful things.
St. Pölten, the historic city with the seat of the bishop, is home to the Museum am Dom, founded in 1888 in the former monastery cloister. The museum's extensive collection mainly comprises sacred art, including numerous sculptures, paintings (including works by Kremser Schmidt and Johann Michael Rottmayr), altars and liturgical implements and vestments. A guided tour takes in not only the museum at the cathedral, but also the former air-raid shelter on the cathedral square and the bishop's crypt.
For over 100 years now, the Mariazell Railway has been an important link for pilgrims travelling to Mariazell. The journey on Austria's longest narrow-gauge railway takes you over 19 viaducts and through 21 tunnels. Enjoy the magnificent views of the picturesque Pielach Valley, the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park and the idyllic Mariazell countryside as you travel on rails to the pilgrimage site of Mariazell.
