Sacred, Cheerful, Sweet

From the Romans to the present day with entertaining stories and history. From the baroque Rathausplatz to Herrenplatz and Riemerplatz with its unique palaces and the beautiful pedestrian zone, the route leads to the extensively renovated former Jewish synagogue. 

Domplatz is home to the mighty cathedral with the remarkable cloister of the former Augustinian monastery, the oldest monastery in Lower Austria. When it was abolished by Emperor Joseph II in 1784, it could already look back on 1,000 years of history. 

The MUSEUM AM DOM St. Pölten exhibits ecclesiastical art in all its facets. In addition to paintings and figurines, the museum's collection also includes precious items of goldsmithery and numerous liturgical textiles, which can be viewed in the treasury on a guided tour. The museum rooms themselves are also of historical significance: the museum is housed on the first floor of a former Augustinian canons' monastery. The baroque monastery library with ceiling frescoes by Paul Troger and Daniel Gran is open to the public.  

"SCHÄDELKULT & STIFTSTUMULT" 1,000 YEARS OF HIPPOLYTKLOSTER" The annual exhibition 2024. The first monastery on Lower Austrian soil was founded in today's St. Pölten around the year 800. This monastery, which was endowed with the relics of St Hippolytus, was of decisive importance for the development of St Pölten - which is reflected not least in the name of the city, which goes back to the name "Hippolytus". The exhibition focuses on the eventful history of the 1,000-year existence of the monastery, which was dissolved by Emperor Joseph II in 1784 and eventually became today's episcopal seat.

Now it's time for some refreshments with the special "Prandtauerjause": coffee or tea and Prandtau cake at Cafè Pusch. The former confectioner Pusch has dedicated this special pastry dream (fluffy nut pastry, smart pear and plum jam and an extra smooth chocolate glaze) to the ingenious baroque master builder Jakob Prandtauer. 

Incidentally, master builder Jakob Prandtauer - as well as painter Daniel Gran - found his final resting place in the cloister of the former St. Pölten Augustinian canons' monastery.
