Weekly market on the cathedral square: a meeting place for gourmets and connoisseurs

The Cathedral Square in St. Pölten, once the centre of the ancient Aelium Cetium, is now one of the largest and most historic squares in the city. Surrounded by impressive historical buildings, including the baroque-style diocese building and the ancient savings bank building, the cathedral square has had a special function since 1786: it is home to the popular weekly market, which takes place every Thursday and Saturday.

This traditional market is known far beyond the city limits and is often referred to as the ‘belly of St. Pölten’. Young and old meet here to buy fresh, regional produce and enjoy the special atmosphere. The weekly market offers a year-round shopping experience with a seasonal focus. Farmers from the region offer their home-grown produce, while gardeners delight shoppers with flowers and plants during the peak season. Fruit, vegetables, specialities and textiles round off the varied offer.

Herrenplatz: the daily market and the city market

Herrenplatz is located in the heart of St. Pölten and is known for its artistic design and historical significance. The ‘daily market’ has been held here since the Middle Ages. The square is surrounded by baroque houses and is adorned by the Marian Column and the ‘Gossiping Women’ fountain by sculptor Prof. Hans Freilinger.

Flowers, plants and seasonal fruit and vegetables are offered daily at the Herrenplatz market. Arts and crafts complement the range and give the market a special flair. The city market also takes place every Tuesday, adding fresh bread, cheese, meat and meat products to the range. This market is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors who appreciate fresh food and artisan products.
